Confused By a Vision? Peter and Cornelius

Is it okay if we hear from the Lord but we don’t understand it? It happens to me sometimes. And it happened to Peter too when he received a vision.

From Acts 10:

The next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray.

And he became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance and saw the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth.

In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air. And there came a voice to him: “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” But Peter said, “By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.”

And the voice came to him again a second time, “What God has made clean, do not call common.” This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.

Acts 10:9-16

Interestingly, Peter is hungry and is likely thinking about food and then the Lord communicates to Peter through a vision using symbolism about the item Peter was thinking about.

What is Peter to make of this? He’s confused:

Now while Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what the vision that he had seen might mean, …

Acts 10:17

Based on this interaction with Peter, I propose that it is okay if you do not yet understand what the Lord has spoken to you and if you do not understand how to apply it. Neither did Peter.

Peter goes to meet with Cornelius, a Roman centurion, and his family. Peter states that he should not do this, but recalls the vision from the Lord:

And [Peter] said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean.”

Acts 10:28

Peter was confused by the vision, but it was eventually resolved by Peter following the direction of the Lord (Acts 10:19-20). It was also spoken symbolically using language Peter knew and understood, but he needed additional information and direction.

Have you heard from the Lord and you are confused? Maybe like Peter, you just need more time and revelation from the Lord.
