Hearing from the Lord: Conscience

Does the Lord still speak today? Yes! One way He speaks is through your conscience. Do you know what is right from wrong, good from evil? Where does that come from? It comes from the Holy Spirit.

Jesus says:

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper [Holy Spirit] will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
John 16:7-9

Paul says it in a different way:

For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.
Romans 2:14-16

That tension you feel when you’re doing the wrong thing and you know it is probably the Holy Spirit. What do we do now? Do the right thing! James says it this way:

Whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

James 4:17

But what if you do the wrong thing? Repent! And ask for forgiveness. It was paid for by Jesus, and we are also cleansed by baptism:

Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water
Hebrews 10:19-22

Peter also makes a connection to baptism and having a clear conscience:

Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.
1 Peter 3:21-22

If there is a pressing thought in your mind and it both blesses someone else and makes you uncomfortable, then there is a really good chance the Lord is speaking to you on that topic. Example: if you feel prompted to give a stranger an encouraging word, or stop and ask them if they need prayer, then listen to that instinct!
