Jesus in the Old Testament: David’s Covenant

Have you asked the question where is Jesus in the Old Testament? Or maybe someone else asked you where does the Old Testament refer to God having a son? There’s a great example David’s covenant with God in 1 Chronicles 17.

The Lord speaks to Nathan the prophet, possibly in a dream,

But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David, ... "

1 Chronicles 17:3-4

When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you, but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.

1 Chronicles 17:11-14

At first this can appear to be a prophecy about Solomon, but is it? The multiple uses of forever point to this being Jesus, who has an eternal kingdom.

This scripture also contains an Old Testament reference to the Father and Son dynamic played out in the gospels:

I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son.

1 Chronicles 17:13
